Over 5000 people live in this close knit community where many locals engage in activities and events held at the community hall including the Moera Potluck Group who aim to meet once a week. The purpose of the group is to share life together with food, stories and more which is a great a mix of residents which is a great way to get to know their neighbours.

The completion of the Waterloo railway line in 1927 and the relocation of the Railway workshops in 1929 attracted people to the Moera area. During this time, the housing in Moera developed quickly as the suburb was the first area in Lower Hutt to have Government housing erected. Today, Moera has a wide multicultural mix with many young families moving into the area. It is a mixture of private and State owned housing situated on comparatively small but well-cared for sections.
